Let’s be honest.
A lot of Nigerians looking at Europe immediately think:
“How much is the tuition?”
“How much is the visa?”
“How much do I need in my account?”
“Who will sponsor me?”
Fair questions.
But what if you could flip the entire conversation?
Instead of looking for a way to pay your way into Europe, you apply for a programme where a scholarship can cover major study and living costs.
Enter:
Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters — 2027
The Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EMJM) are master’s programmes delivered by international university partnerships across Europe and beyond.
And here’s the part that should get your attention:
The 2027 opportunities are coming.
The European Commission announced in July 2026 that 37 new Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters had been selected, with student applications expected to open in autumn 2026 for programmes beginning in September 2027.

💰 What makes Erasmus Mundus different?
This isn’t simply:
“Come and study in Europe.”
The scholarship can provide substantial financial support.
Depending on the programme and scholarship arrangement, Erasmus Mundus scholarships can cover participation costs and contribute towards:

- 🛂 Visa-related costs
- 🏠 Living expenses
- 💶 A monthly living allowance
The current Erasmus+ information states that EU-funded scholarships can be available to the best-ranked students worldwide.
And under the programme framework, the EU scholarship is listed at €1,400 per month for up to 24 months for eligible scholarship holders.
That’s serious funding.
But let’s kill one misconception immediately:
❌ Erasmus Mundus is NOT “free Europe for everybody.”
It is competitive.
You still have to earn the scholarship.

An Erasmus Mundus programme can involve multiple universities in different countries.
The official programme structure requires participating institutions from multiple countries, and students typically experience international mobility as part of the programme.

Then moving to another university or country as part of the same programme.
You’re not simply collecting a degree.
You’re building:
Education + international exposure + professional network + mobility experience.
That’s a completely different experience from simply enrolling in one overseas university.

The European Commission says the 37 newly selected Master’s programmes include areas such as:

Among the newly selected programmes are Master’s focused on Law, Data and Artificial Intelligence, Medical Image Analysis, Semiconductor Chips, Infectious Diseases and One Health, and European Master in Animation.
So this isn’t some narrow scholarship for one particular profession.
There are different academic directions.
🇳🇬 What does this mean for Nigerians?
Here’s where you need to think differently.
If you’re a Nigerian graduate looking at:
🇬🇧 UK
🇨🇦 Canada
🇺🇸 USA
🇩🇪 Germany
and your biggest problem is funding, don’t automatically assume the solution is finding more money.
Sometimes the solution is finding a funded programme.
Erasmus Mundus is open to students from around the world, including applicants outside Europe.
That means Nigerian graduates can legitimately put themselves forward.
But—and this is important—
being Nigerian doesn’t get you the scholarship.
Your application still has to compete.
🧠 Who should start preparing?
If you have a Bachelor’s degree and you’re thinking:
“I want a Master’s abroad, but I don’t want to put my family under crazy financial pressure.”
Then this deserves your attention.
The basic eligibility framework requires applicants to have a Bachelor’s degree, or to be in the final year of one and graduate before the Master’s begins. Some programmes may have additional requirements.
So start looking at yourself honestly.
Do you have:
✔ A solid academic background?
✔ A Bachelor’s degree or are you close to completing one?
✔ A field that connects logically with available programmes?
✔ Good academic/professional documentation?
✔ A convincing motivation for the programme?
✔ The discipline to prepare a competitive application?
If yes, 2027 should already be on your radar.
🚨 And please don’t make this mistake…
Don’t wait until the application portal opens before you start looking for your documents.
That’s amateur hour.
By the time applications open, you should already be thinking about:
📄 Transcript
🎓 Degree certificate
📝 CV
✍️ Motivation letter
📑 Recommendation letters
🌍 Programme requirements
🗣️ English-language requirements where applicable
Each Erasmus Mundus Master’s has its own website, requirements and application process. There isn’t one universal application form for every programme. Students apply directly to the institution or consortium running the chosen Master’s.
That’s why copying somebody else’s application strategy can backfire.
⏰ Don’t wait for “Erasmus 2027 is OPEN!”
This is the part most people get wrong.
The official Erasmus+ guidance says that, in most cases, applications are submitted between October and January for courses beginning the following academic year, although the exact deadline depends on the individual Master’s programme.
So for September 2027 programmes:
NOW → Research + prepare
AUTUMN 2026 → Watch for programme applications
LATE 2026 / EARLY 2027 → Submit applications according to each programme’s deadline
SEPTEMBER 2027 → Programme begins for successful candidates
Dates vary.
Don’t assume every programme closes on the same day.
🇪🇺 Europe doesn’t always have to start with a huge bank balance.
Sometimes it starts with:
A strong academic profile.
A well-chosen programme.
A serious application.
And the willingness to prepare before everybody else notices the opportunity.
Erasmus Mundus isn’t a guaranteed ticket.
It’s competitive, and scholarships are awarded to highly ranked applicants.
But for the right graduate, it can completely change the economics of studying in Europe.
